How to calculate square footage
Square footage is the measure of area inside a space, expressed in square
feet (sq ft or ft²). For any rectangular room, the calculation is simply
length multiplied by width — as long as both measurements are in feet.
Square Footage = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Example: A room that is 12 ft long and 10 ft wide
is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet.
If you measured in inches
Divide each measurement by 12 to convert it to feet before multiplying, or
just select "Inches" in the calculator above and it converts for you. A wall
144 inches long is 144 ÷ 12 = 12 feet.
Odd-shaped rooms
Break an L-shaped or irregular room into separate rectangles, calculate
each one, and add them together — that's exactly what the "Multiple rooms"
tab does. For a round area, square footage = π × radius², where the radius
is half the diameter.
Round area = 3.14159 × (Diameter ÷ 2)²

Estimating flooring or material cost
Once you know the square footage, multiply it by the price per square foot
of your flooring, tile, carpet, or paint to estimate the material cost. Enter
a price in the calculator and it does this automatically.
Always add 5–10% waste for cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching.
Carpet and tile are usually priced per square foot; some
flooring is priced per square yard (1 sq yd = 9 sq ft).
Paint is estimated by wall area, not floor area — measure wall
height × wall length instead.
Square footage conversions
1 square yard = 9 square feet
1 square meter = 10.764 square feet
1 acre = 43,560 square feet
1 square foot = 144 square inches
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate square feet of a room?
Measure the length and width of the room in feet, then
multiply them together. A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 120 square feet.
How do I find square footage from inches?
Divide each measurement in inches by 12 to convert to
feet, then multiply. Or select "Inches" in the calculator and it converts
automatically.
How do I calculate square footage of an L-shaped room?
Split the room into two or more rectangles, calculate the
square footage of each, and add them together. The "Multiple rooms" tab
does this for you.
How many square feet is a 10x10 room?
A 10 ft by 10 ft room is 100 square feet (10 × 10 = 100).
How do I calculate square footage for flooring?
Calculate the total square footage of the floor, then add
5–10% extra for cuts and waste. Multiply by the price per square foot to
estimate cost.
