Quick answer: To fill a PDF form online, open it above. If it has fillable fields they are listed and you type straight into them. If it does not, choose Text and click each blank line to type. Press Save PDF when you are done. Tick Flatten fields on save if the form should no longer be editable by whoever receives it.

Fillable Forms: Real Fields, Filled Properly

Many official PDFs contain interactive form fields: text boxes, checkboxes and drop-down lists. When you open one here, the tool finds those fields and lists them in the Form fields panel. You can type into the panel or straight onto the page, and the answer goes into the real field.

That matters for the organisation receiving it. Their software can read the answers back out of the fields, which is exactly what a fillable form is for. Typing on top of a fillable form as if it were paper loses that.

When you save, the fields keep your answers and remain editable, unless you tick Flatten fields on save. Flattening turns the answers into ordinary page content so they can no longer be changed, which is what some submissions ask for.

Flat Forms: Fill Them Like Paper

Plenty of forms are just a picture of a paper form saved as PDF, with lines to write on and boxes to tick but nothing interactive. The panel tells you when no fields were found.

Form toolbar toolWhat it does
TextClick on a line and type; the text lines up with the line you clicked
Check / Cross / DotPlaces a mark sized for a tick box
DateDrops today’s date onto the page
Move / resize / deleteEvery item you place stays editable until you save

Signing the Form

Most forms end with a signature line. Switch to the Sign tab without leaving the document, draw, type or upload your signature, and place it on the line with the date beside it. For more on signing, including when an electronic signature is and is not accepted, see Sign PDF.

Why Fill Forms Here

  • Real field detection. Fillable forms are filled in their actual fields, so the receiver can read the answers.
  • Flat forms too. Type on the lines and tick the boxes of forms that were never made fillable.
  • Flatten on save. Lock the answers into the page when a submission asks for a non-editable copy.
  • Private by design. Tax, medical and HR forms are filled in your browser and never uploaded.

How to Fill a PDF Form

  1. Add your PDF form. Click the box or drag the file in. Fillable fields are detected and listed automatically.
  2. Fill in the fields. Type into the fields on the page or in the panel. For a flat form, choose Text and click each line.
  3. Tick, date and sign. Use Check, Cross or Date for boxes and dates, and the Sign tab for the signature line.
  4. Save PDF. Tick Flatten fields if the answers should be locked, then press Save PDF.

How the Browser-Based Form Filler Works

Forms tend to carry the most sensitive information anyone asks for: tax identifiers, dates of birth, addresses, medical and employment history. Many online form fillers upload that to their servers. This one does not.

The form is displayed with PDF.js and its fields are read and filled with pdf-lib, both running inside your browser tab. Nothing is transmitted.

XFA forms: A few forms use an Adobe-specific format called XFA, and some use scripts that calculate totals. Those features only work in Adobe Reader. If a form tells you it must be opened in Adobe Reader, that is the reason, and it is best to follow that instruction.

Privacy

Your PDF is opened and changed entirely inside your browser tab. It is not uploaded to a server, not stored, and no account or email is required. Close the tab and nothing remains.

That describes your file specifically. Like most websites, Anchor AI Tools uses analytics and loads fonts and scripts from third-party providers, which is covered in our privacy policy. The claim that matters for a tax form or a job application is that the document itself stays on your machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PDF form filler free?

Yes. There is no signup, no limit and no watermark added to your form.

Is my form uploaded to a server?

No. The form is opened and filled inside your browser tab and is never transmitted, which matters for tax, medical and employment forms.

How do I know if my PDF is fillable?

Open it here. The Form fields panel says how many fillable fields were found. If it finds none, the form is flat and you can fill it with the Text, Check, Cross and Date tools.

Can I fill a PDF form that is not fillable?

Yes. Choose Text and click on a line to type, and use Check, Cross or Dot for tick boxes. Everything can be moved and resized.

What does flatten fields mean?

Flattening turns the answers into ordinary page content so the fields can no longer be edited. Some organisations ask for a flattened copy. Leave it unticked if you may need to change an answer later.

Can I sign the form as well?

Yes. Switch to the Sign tab in the same window to draw, type or upload a signature and add the date.

Why does my form say it needs Adobe Reader?

Some forms are built with an Adobe-specific format called XFA or rely on scripts, and only Adobe Reader supports those. If a form says so, open it in Adobe Reader.

Can I save a partly filled form and finish later?

Yes. Save without flattening and the answers stay in editable fields. Open the saved copy here again to carry on.
