Use fewer than 52 for unpaid time off

Hourly rate

$30.00per hour

Quick answer: Divide annual salary by the hours you work in a year: hours per week × weeks per year. A full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so a $62,400 salary is $30.00 an hour. Fewer paid weeks raise the effective hourly rate.

How the salary to hourly calculator works

    hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks)Full time: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours a year
    • Daily rate = hourly rate × (hours per week ÷ days per week)
    • Weekly rate = annual salary ÷ paid weeks
    • Monthly rate = annual salary ÷ 12

If you take unpaid time off, lower the paid weeks. 50 weeks accounts for two unpaid weeks and spreads the same salary over fewer hours, so the hourly figure rises slightly.

Worked example: $62,400 a year, full time

    $62,400, 40 hours a week, 5 days, 52 paid weeks

    1. Annual hours: 40 × 52 = 2,080
    2. Hourly: $62,400 ÷ 2,080 = $30.00
    3. Daily: $30.00 × 8 = $240.00
    4. Weekly: $62,400 ÷ 52 = $1,200.00
    5. Monthly: $62,400 ÷ 12 = $5,200.00

    Result: $30.00 an hour

The same salary with two unpaid weeks

    1. Annual hours: 40 × 50 = 2,000
    2. Hourly: $62,400 ÷ 2,000 = $31.20

    Result: $31.20 an hour

    Frequently asked questions

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide annual salary by the hours you are paid for in a year: hours per week × paid weeks per year. A standard full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.

What is $62,400 a year per hour?

$30.00 an hour, based on 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours).

How many work hours are in a year?

    A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.

Does this calculator account for unpaid time off?

Yes. Lower the paid weeks per year. 50 weeks instead of 52 spreads the salary over 2,000 hours instead of 2,080, which raises the effective hourly rate.

What is the difference between 2,080 and 2,000 hours?

2,080 hours assumes every week of the year is paid. 2,000 hours assumes two unpaid weeks and is often used as a quick rule of thumb.

How do I convert an hourly rate back to a salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by annual hours. $30.00 × 2,080 = $62,400 a year. Switch the calculator to hourly to salary to do this.
