Covering text is not the same as removing it
A white box drawn over a name, salary or ID number sits on top of the text. The characters are still in the file and anyone can select, copy or extract them.
For anything that must stay hidden: Use Redact and let it save. Redacted pages are flattened automatically, and Save flattened PDF does the same for the whole file, so the text underneath genuinely stops existing. Then try to select the redacted area in the finished file: if nothing selects, it worked.
Editing text that is already in the PDF
Most free editors only let you add a text box on top. Here the page’s text layer is read when the file opens: hover a line to highlight it, click to type in place. The tool reads the embedded font name, detects serif, sans-serif or monospace and bold or italic, and samples ink and paper colour from the page.
What it gets right, and what it does not
- Position, size, colour and background are measured from the document and matched accurately.
- The typeface is matched to the nearest standard font (Helvetica, Times or Courier), not reproduced exactly. On a heavily branded document the edit will be visible; every browser editor has this limit.
- Scanned documents cannot be text-edited. There is no text layer, only pixels. The tool tells you when it opens one.

How the browser-based editor works
Many sites upload your document, edit it on a server and send it back, sometimes with a watermark. This tool uses PDF.js, Mozilla’s engine from Firefox, to render pages and read text, and pdf-lib to write a new copy of the file, both inside your browser tab.
The limit is your device’s memory rather than a server quota. Ordinary documents open instantly; a several-hundred-page file at high zoom is where a phone will struggle.

Privacy

Can I edit text that is already in the PDF?
Yes. Click any line and retype it in place. Position, size and colour are read from the file’s text layer rather than guessed.
Will the edited text match the original font?
Closely, not exactly. Browsers cannot re-embed a PDF’s subset fonts, so the tool maps to the nearest of Helvetica, Times or Courier with bold and italic detected.
Why can I not click the text in my PDF?
The file is a scan: a picture of text with no text layer. This tool does not do OCR, but you can still add text, sign and annotate on top.
Does white-out remove the text underneath?
No. A white box sits on top and the characters stay in the file. Use Redact and save flattened so the text genuinely stops existing.
What does flattening cost me?
Text is no longer selectable or searchable, and the file is usually larger because each page becomes an image.
Can I add a signature?
Yes: draw it, type it in a handwriting face or upload a photo. It is a visible signature, not a cryptographic digital signature.
Can I rotate, delete or reorder pages?
Yes, in the Page tab. The downloaded file follows the order you set.
