This matters more than anything else on the page. When you draw a white box over a name, a salary or an ID number, the box sits on top of the text. The characters are still inside the file. Anyone who opens it can select them, copy them, or extract them with a script. The page still looks clean, which is exactly what makes it dangerous.
If you are hiding something that must stay hidden, use Redact and leave Flatten pages to image switched on. Flattening turns each page into a picture, so the text underneath genuinely stops existing. Then open the finished file and try to select the redacted area. If nothing selects, it worked.
This is the part most free editors skip. They let you add a text box on top, which is fine for filling a form and useless for fixing a typo in a paragraph.
